Women's Basketball readies for league play with win over St. Paul'sLAWRENCEVILLE, Va. -- Senior guard Ashley Cox (Richmond, Va.) scored 16 points and dished out five assists to help Catawba College to a 76-55 victory over host St. Paul’s at Taylor-Whitehead Gym on Thursday night. The Lady Indians improve to 9-4, while St. Paul’s falls to 0-13.
Cox hit a pair of free throws and followed with a three-pointer to put the Lady Indians on top 12-2 just over four minutes into the game. Isiaette Darden (Wilson, NC) would connect on three three-pointers in a 19-2 Catawba run that pushed the lead to 33-14 at the 5:44 mark of the opening half.
Catawba would hold a 41-20 edge at the break and St. Paul’s never got within single digits. The Lady Tigers did trim the deficit to a dozen at 50-38 on a layup by Rebecca Edmunds with 12:33 to play, but Cox hit two three’s to start a 17-7 run and push the advantage back to 20.
Darden followed Cox with 11 points, while Julie Kaufman (Damascus, Md.) and Tamekia Foster (Chesapeake, Va.) each added eight points. The Lady Indians hit on 45% of their shots in the opening half and 42% for the game. Catawba was 13-of-15 at the line and held 45-31 edge on the boards.
Nikki Bowen led four Lady Tigers in double figures with 15. Edmonds and Keycha Johnson each had 13, while Alice Gaines had 10. St. Paul’s shot nearly 50% in the final half, finishing the game at 39%, but were only 11-of-21 at the line.
