Samples helps East squad to win at D2 Football All-Star Game

KINGSVILLE, Tex. --  Catawba College quarterback Luke Samples (Elkin, N.C.), who was named the Offensive MVP, led the East squad to an 18-15 win in the Cactus Bowl Division II All-Star Game on Friday night at Javelina Stadium on the campus of Texas A & M-Kingsville.  The senior tossed a pair of touchdown passes as the East rallied from a 15-10 fourth quarter deficit.Samples was 14-of-23 for the game, equaling a Cactus Bowl record with 192 yards.  He teamed up with Presbyterian wide out Tim Pope in the second quarter on a 50-yard pass, also a Bowl Game record, to set up a touchdown which came as Samples tossed a 12-yard pass to Rod Dewalt of Mars Hill.  Pope would be named the game’s MVP with six receptions for 101 yards, catching four balls from Samples for 93 yards.

The East trailed 15-10 when Samples took over from his own 29 with just over seven minutes to play.  He orchestrated a 71-yard drive in four plays, culminating with a 30-yard pass to Tuskegee’s Harry Williams with 5:50 remaining.  He added a two-point conversion pass to LeRon McCoy for the 18-15 lead.

The West looked for a final chance to win the game, but Samples hooked up with McCoy for a 33-yard gain on 3rd-and-6 inside the final minute.  Shane Kelley, of Carson-Newman, was the other East signal-caller.  He was 7-of-17 for 93 yards, leading the East to a field goal on its opening possession.  Catawba offensive lineman Daniel Lynch also suited up for the East and recovered a West fumble on a punt.
