Men's Basketball crushes Newberry 94-69

SALISBURY, N.C. -- Catawba College ran to a 30-4 lead in the opening ten minutes and never looked back in defeating visiting Newberry 94-69 in South Atlantic Conference menís basketball action on Wednesday night at Goodman Gym. Catawba improves to 10-4 overall and 1-1 in the SAC, while Newberry fell to 4-9 and 0-2. Catawba scored the opening seven points then added a 14-0 run that was stopped by a Reggie Coleman (Orangeburg, S.C.) jumper at the 13:21 mark as Catawba led 21-4. Catawba would push its lead to 50-21 with 3:36 in the opening half before Newberry rallied to within 54-33 by the break. Catawba hit on 59% (20-of-34) from the field in the opening half, while Newberry hit 37% and had 17 turnovers, 11 more than Catawba. A quick basket by Newberry to start the final half reduced the margin to 19, but Catawba went on a 12-0 run to lead 66-35 with 14:49 remaining. Marcus Reddick (Salisbury, N.C.) would give Catawba its largest lead of 39 points at 84-45 after a free throw with 7:75 to go. Brian Graves (Newport News, Va.) led five Catawba double-figure scorers with 13 points. Chris Wooldridge (Norfolk, Va.) and Jamel Hamilton (Virginia Beach, Va.) each had a dozen off the bench. Helgi Magnusson (Reykjavik, ICELAND) and Jason Diggs (Christiansburg, Va.) had 10 each. Magnusson added six assists, five steals and four rebounds. Michael Dease (Bennettsville, S.C.) and Tyler Fisher (Social Circle, Ga.) had 12 points apiece to lead Newberry. Newberry enjoyed a 47-32 edge on the boards with 20 offensive rebounds, but the visitors had 32 turnovers to 18 for Catawba. Catawba would shot 58% for the game to 35% for Newberry. #####
