Women's Basketball falls to Tusculum 72-60SALISBURY, N.C. -- Tusculum jumped to a nine-point lead midway through the second half and went on to defeat host Catawba 72-60 in South Atlantic Conference women’s basketball action on Saturday afternoon at Goodman Gym. The win improves the Pioneers to 6-10 overall and 1-2 in the SAC, while Catawba falls to 10-6 and 1-2.
Tusculum led by as many as 14 in the opening half after a three-point play by Ronnie Watkins (Memphis, Tenn.) at 29-14 with 8:05 remaining. Catawba would rally from there, scoring the final 11 points of the half to close within 34-33 at the break.
The teams would trade baskets over the first five minutes of the second half, but a pair of free throws by Brooke Underwood (Knoxville, Tenn.) gave the Pioneers the lead for good at 45-44. Amber Redding (Sevierville, Tenn.) followed with a jumper and after a A.J. Johnson (Winter Haven, Fla.) three-pointer, Tusculum led 50-44 with 14 minutes to play.
Catawba cut a 10-point deficit to five with seven minutes to go, but a three-pointer by Chassity Martin (Salem, Va.) pushed the lead back to eight at 61-53. A three-pointer by Redding with 2:50 left gave Tusculum a 68-60 advantage.
Watkins had 18 points and eight rebounds to pace Tusculum, while Johnson added 17 points and seven rebounds off the bench. Martin and Redding each had 12 points. Ashley Cox (Richmond, Va.) led Catawba with 19 points. Kendall Prescott (Exeter, N.H.) had 11 and Isiaette Darden (Wilson, N.C.) 10. The Pioneers shot 49% for the game to just 34% for Catawba.
