Women's Basketball comes up short at Mars Hill

MARS HILL, N.C. -- Mars Hill used a late 12-3 run to help the Lady Lions to a 64-59 win over visiting Catawba in South Atlantic Conference women’s basketball action on Wednesday night at Stanford Arena. Mars Hill improves to 9-6 overall and 2-2 in the SAC with the win, while the Lady Indians fall to 10-7 and 1-3. Catawba held a 28-26 edge at the break and went up 32-28 on a pair of free throws by Tamekia Foster (Chesapeake, Va.), but Mars Hill went on a 21-5 run from that point to take a 49-27 lead at the 11:08 mark after a layup by Kristi Ferris. The Lady Indians would rally, scoring 12 straight points to knot the score at 49-49 with 7:48 left on a free throw by Foster. Mars Hill would quickly take the lead back on a three-pointer by Abby DeBusk and the Lady Lions never trailed again. The 12-3 run that followed put Mars Hill up 61-52 with 2:37 left. Catawba would whittle the deficit to 62-59 with 55 seconds left after a three-pointer by Christina Carmon (Stafford, Va.). The Lady Indians had a chance to further cut into the lead after a Mars Hill turnover, but Ashley Cox (Richmond, Va.) missed a shot and Ferris hit a pair of free throws with 13 seconds remaining for the final margin. Foster led three double-figure scorers for Catawba with 17 points before fouling out with 5:04 to play. Carmon added 14 points off the bench, while Cox added 12. Ferris led Mars Hill with 19 points with Lindsey Jones following with 16. Mars Hill canned 47% for the game, including 55% in the final half. Catawba made just 36% and only 32% after the break. Mars Hill also enjoyed a 39-27 edge on the boards to help offset 23 turnovers. The Lady Indians had 14 turnovers. The Lady Lions cashed in on 16-of-18 (89%) attempts from the line, while Catawba hit just 67% (18-of-27). #######
