Mark Smith's two-run blast sends Catawba to 11-10 season-opening win.SALISBURY, NC – A three-run homerun off the bat of Mark Smith (Browns Summit, NC) in the bottom of the eighth, propelled the Catawba Indians to an 11-10 victory over the Barton Bulldogs in the 2005 season opener, a part of the annual Dick Williams Classic, on Friday night at Newman Park. Catawba jumps to 1-0, while Barton drops to 0-1. The Tribe got on the board early, picking up three runs in the second and third innings. Freshman Chad Baker (Jamestown, NC) had an RBI double to score Aarom Rimer (Salisbury, NC), who led off the inning with a two-bagger. David Thomas (Winston-Salem, NC) and Matt Smith (Browns Summitt, NC) picked up the other RBI each having a SAC-fly in the frame. Rimer picked up a two-run double in the third, while Chad Baker picked up an RBI single, giving Catawba a 6-0 advantage. Barton picked up two runs in the top of the fourth and fifth cutting the Tribe in half at 8-4. Will Walmsley (Lexington, NC) grabbed a two-run single in the fourth while back-to-back dingers by Eric McInerny (Cape Carteret, NC) and Tyler Petty (Rocky Mount, NC) accounted for the two Bulldog runs in the fifth. Catawba was able to sandwich two runs in the home-half of the fourth as Matt Baker (Charlotte, NC) blasted a two-run shot over the left-field wall Barton threw a four-spot on the board in the seventh deadlocking the game at eight. Rufus Wilson (Washington, NC) smoked a two-run shot, Justin Wilkes (Snow Hill, NC) picked up an RBI single to right with the final run of the inning coming from a Catawba error. The Bulldogs made the game interesting in the top of the ninth as Dennis Blackmon (Clayton, NC) sliced an RBI-single through the right side scoring Brock Godwin (Wilson, NC) who led off with a double down the RF line. McInerny, who also picked an RBI single through the right side, was thrown out at second attempting to get himself in a run-down trying to score Blackmon from third. Tim Smith (Walnut Cove, NC) picked up the win in relief for the Indians in a contest that saw 21 runs, 27 hits and 11 hurlers, five for Barton, six for Catawba. Jason Evans (Smithfield, NC) picked up the hard-luck loss for the Bulldogs. Both teams will be back in action tomorrow in day two as Barton will take on Lenoir-Rhyne in a doubleheader beginning at 10:30am, while Catawba will play two against Pfeiffer starting at 3:30pm. ######
