Baseball battles to doubleheader split with Pfeiffer

SALISBURY, N.C. -- Catawba and Pfeiffer split a college baseball doubleheader in action at the Dick Williams Classic on Saturday at Newman Park on the campus of Catawba College. Pfeiffer took the opener 14-4, while the Indians bounced back to gain the split with a 6-3 victory. Catawba now stands at 2-1 with the Falcons now 1-3. In the opener, Pfeiffer jumped on the Tribe in the second inning with five runs. Matt Long (Charlotte, N.C.) had a RBI single, but the big blow was a grand slam by Mike McClain (Stoney Creek, N.C.). Catawba got two back in its second on a RBI double by Nick Lefko (Faith, N.C.) and a sacrifice fly by David Thomas (Winston-Salem, N.C.). Lefko enjoyed a 3-for-4 day with a pair of RBI. The Falcons would add four more in the third to go up 9-2. McClain had a RBI single in the frame. Pfeiffer would put the game out of reach in the fifth as Blake Jordan (Haw River, N.C.) hit a two-run homer and Jordan Taylor (Charlotte, N.C.) a RBI single to push the Falcon advantage to 12-4. Seven Falcons collected two hits in a 16-hit attack with McClain producing five RBI. An infield single by Brian York (Midland, N.C.) gave the Falcons a 1-0 lead in the nightcap, but Catawba would strike for four runs with two outs in the bottom of the second. Thomas had a two-run single, while Lefko delivered a two-run double. Aaron Rimer (Salisbury, N.C.) and Matt Kepley (Greensboro, N.C.) collected RBI in the third for the Tribe as Catawba took a 6-1 lead. Long had a sacrifice fly and Kevin Dietrich (Charlotte, N.C.) a RBI single in the fifth as Pfeiffer closed within 6-3, but Zach Evans (Greensboro, N.C.) shut the door in the final inning. He allowed just a baserunner by error with two strikeouts in the frame. Rimer was the only player in the second game for either team with two hits. Matt Smith (Browns Summitt, N.C.) tossed five innings to gain the win for the Tribe. He allowed just two hits over five innings with three walks and six strikeouts. ######
