Baseball takes DH sweep of BartonSALISBURY, N.C. -- Catawba College swept a college baseball doubleheader from Barton in action at the Dick Williams Classic on Sunday afternoon at Newman Park on the Catawba campus. Catawba improves to 4-1 on the year with wins of 21-13 and 6-2. The Bulldogs fall to 2-3. Catawba pounded out 21 hits in the opener with freshman David Thomas (Winston-Salem, N.C.) and junior Jimbo Davis (Salisbury, N.C.) each collecting four safeties. Davis had six RBI on the day, including a two-run homer. Thomas drove home three with a triple and a double. Matt Baker (Charlotte, N.C.) hit a two-run homer to stake the Tribe to a 2-0 lead. Barton would come back in the second as Rufus Wilson (Washington, N.C.) hit a grand slam after three walks to start the inning. The Bulldogs added two more runs in the third and Davis answered for Catawba with his two-run homer to bring the Indians within 6-5 after three inning. Catawba exploded for 11 runs in the fourth inning to break the game open. The first 11 Tribe batter reached base in the frame, including a stretch of six straight hits after a leadoff walk. Mark Smith’s (Browns Summitt, N.C.) single gave Catawba a 7-6 lead, while Davis had a pair of two-run singles in the inning. Barton struck back with three runs in the fifth, getting within 16-9, but Nick Lefko (Faith, N.C.) helped Catawba match the output in its fifth with a two-run homer. The Bulldogs added three more runs in the sixth, but Brian Benton (Wallace, N.C.) helped shut down the rally, allowing just two hits with three strikeouts in an inning and two-thirds of relief. Jeff Abdelnour (Cohoes, N.Y.) went the distance to earn the win in the nightcap. The senior scattered eight hits over seven innings. Barton led 2-1 after RBI by Tyler Petty (Rocky Mount, N.C.) and Brock Godwin (Wilson, N.C.), but Thomas Giles (Lynchburg, Va.) put the Tribe up for good with a two-out, two-run homer in the Catawba fourth. Bryan Sommer (New Port Richey, Fla.) gave the Tribe a pair of insurance runs with a two-run double in the fifth. Smith joined Sommer and Giles with two hits in the contest. Dennis Blackmon (Clayton, N.C.) had three hits for the Bulldogs. ######
