Baseball comeback not enough; UNCP picks up 5-4 winSALISBURY, N.C. – A one-out single by Robbie Redic (Durham, NC) in the ninth-inning proved to be the game-winner as the UNC-Pembroke Braves squeaked out a 5-4 win over host Catawba in baseball action, Tuesday afternoon at Newman Park. UNCP remains unbeaten at 6-0, while the Indians drop to 4-2. After three scoreless innings, the Braves put up two runs in the fourth as Nolan Johnson (Winston-Salem, NC) delivered a two-run base hit, bringing in Barret Otto (Garner, NC) and Jason Morales (Fayetteville, NC), who both led off the frame with infield singles. The Tribe responded in the bottom of the fifth as Zach Evans (Greensboro, NC) blasted an opposite-field two-run shot, tying the game at 2-2, after five innings of play. UNCP got a two-run blast of their own off the bat of Morales in the eighth, giving the Braves a late two run lead. After Redic gave the Braves the 5-2 lead, Catawba would mount a comeback as Evans picked up the first RBI with a groundout to second, while freshman Matt Kepley (Greensboro, NC) garnered the other RBI. It wasn’t enough as Sandy Jacobs (Pembroke, NC) shut the door on the Tribe, picking up his second save of the season, striking out the final two batters. Neither starter figured in the decision as UNCP hurler Matt Swift (Mount Airy, NC) went six innings allowing two runs on four hits while striking out seven. Indian starter Matt Fairweather (Lenoir, NC) tossed seven innings, allowing two runs on six hits grabbing seven strikeouts as well. Cody Crotts (Lewisville, NC) picked up his first win of the year for Pembroke while Brian Benton (Wallace, NC) suffered the loss for Catawba. ######
