Women's Basketball tops Newberry with 26-of-30 night from the line

NEWBERRY, S.C. -- Catawba pulled away over the final four minutes and recorded a 75-61 win over host Newberry in South Atlantic Conference women’s basketball action at Eleazer Arena on Wednesday night. The win improves the Lady Indians to 12-10 overall and 3-6 in the SAC, while Newberry falls to 14-8 and 4-5. Catawba led just 61-58 after a jumper by Newberry’s Tonique Frasier with 4:55 left, but made 12 straight free throws and got a jumper from Cristina Carmon (Stafford, Va.) over the final 3:57 to take the win. Catawba took the lead for good on a jumper by Isiaette Darden (Wilson, N.C.) with 9:12 to play at 53-52. The score was tied six times and the lead changed hands 15 times in the tightly contested battle. Newberry the lead for much of the opening half and had several six point leads and took a 35-33 edge to the break after a three-pointer by Chance Stewart with just 33 seconds remaining in the half. Catawba would grab a five-point lead on a layup by Darden with 14:49 to play. Newberry fought back and led 52-49 until jumpers by Hannah Davis (Williamsburg, Va.) and Darden gave the Lady Indians a lead they would not relinquish. Catawba won the game at the free throw line, making 26-of-30 attempts. Newberry was just 3-of-7 at the charity stripe. Newberry also had 26 turnovers to 18 for the Tribe and Catawba converted those mistakes into 28 points. Darden had 17 points to pace Catawba, while Carmon added 15, going 9-of-11 at the line. Ashley Cox (Richmond, Va.) also reached double figures with 12 points. Frasier had 20 points and 15 rebounds for Newberry, while Carnicha Bellinger added 17. Newberyr shot 44% for the contest, while Catawba hit on 39% from the field. #####
