Baseball falls to Belmont Abbey, Giles enjoys 4-for-4 dayBELMONT, N.C. -- Catawba dropped a 5-3 decision to host Belmont Abbey in baseball action on Wednesday afternoon. The Indians fall to 4-3 on the season. Belmont Abbey rapped out a dozen hits in the win, led by Derek Brown, who went 3-for-4. Catawba took a 1-0 lead in the opening inning on a base hit by Matt Smith (Browns Summitt, N.C.). The Crusaders came right back as Patrick Atwell led off with a triple and scored on Brown’s double. Chris Brake put Belmont Abbey on top with a RBI single and scored on Seth Waller’s ground out. Run-scoring singles by Robert Yero and John Rosette pushed the Crusader lead to 5-2 after four innings. Catawba got single runs in the fifth and ninth to close out the scoring. Thomas Giles (Lynchburg, Va.) capped a 4-for-4 outing with a solo homer to lead off the Tribe ninth. Freshman David Thomas (Winston-Salem, N.C.) had a pair of hits in the loss. ######
