Women's Basketball cruises past Tusculum behind Foster's double-double

GREENEVILLE, Tenn. -- Catawba held Tusculum scoreless for an eight-minute stretch in the first half and led by as many as 19 points before halftime and cruised to a 57-42 victory in South Atlantic Conference women’s basketball action on Saturday afternoon at Alpine Arena. The win improves Catawba to 13-10 overall and 4-6 in the SAC, while the Pioneers fall to 7-17 and 1-9. Tusculum shot 21.4 percent in the first half and 24.2 percent for the contest, and was outrebounded by a 54-29 margin. Catawba never trailed in the contest and after the teams traded three-point baskets in the opening moments, the Lady Indians reeled off seven straight points to lead 10-3. A jumper by TC senior Julie Maples (Knoxville, Tenn.) made the score 17-11 at the 9:55 mark, but Catawba went on a 13-0 run over the next eight minutes, keyed by seven straight points from sophomore Tamekia Foster (Chesapeake, Va.). The Pioneers finally broke the drought with 1:53 to play in the half, but the Lady Indians took a 33-17 lead at the break. Tusculum got as close as 14 (45-31) with 6:37 to play but a 24-point deficit was too much to overcome. Foster led Catawba with her second double-double of the season, posting 15 points and 12 rebounds. Junior Hannah Davis (Williamsburg, Va.) added 12 points. TC sophomore A.J. Johnson (Winter Haven, Fla.) led all scorers with 16 markers and junior Ronnie Watkins (Memphis, Tenn.) pulled down a game-high 13 rebounds. #####
