Men's Soccer rallies to take SAC Tournament title

GREENEVILLE, TN -- Senior Mike Delabar (St. Louis, MO) continued his late-season hot streak, scoring twice, as the fifth-seeded Indians defeated sixth-seeded Carson-Newman 4-1 to claim the Championship of the 2001 Food Lion South Atlantic Conference Men's Soccer Tournament on Sunday night at Pioneer Field. The tournament was held in conjunction with the Food Lion SAC Fall Sports Festival hosted by Tusculum College. Catawba finished its season at 13-7, while Carson-Newman ends its season at 9-8-2. After waiting two hours past the scheduled kickoff time, due to the women's final going to penalty kicks, it took Catawba another hour of playing time to find its stride. The Indians fell behind 1-0 in the opening minutes on a goal by the Eagles' Josh Schiding at the 13:55 mark. The breakaway goal stood up well into the second half before freshman Nickalus Brown (Ajax, ONT, CANADA) notched his first goal of the season, on the first of three assists by senior Jeff Shea (Ft. Langley, BC, CANADA), with just over 22 minutes remaining. Eleven minutes later, Shea assisted Brennan Regner (Mebane, NC) for the eventual game-winner at the 78:18 mark. Delabar would add two goals in the final 10 minutes for the final outcome. Delabar scored six goals in the tournament, two in each game, and finished the season by scoring goals in nine of the final 10 matches with five two-goal efforts and 14 during the span. He totaled 18 for the season, fifth highest by a Catawba player, and the most since Craig Morton tallied a school record 21 in 1991. It was a complete turnaround from last season when Catawba surrendered a two-goal lead in the last half in a 4-2 loss to Lenoir-Rhyne in last year's tournament final. It was the second time Catawba had claimed the SAC Tournament title, but the first in 11 years since winning the initial event in 1990. #6 CARSON-NEWMAN (9-8-2) 1 0 -- 1 #5 CATAWBA (13-7) 0 4 -- 4 SCORING SUMMARY CN - 13:55 - Josh Schiding C - 67:54 - Nickalus Brown (1) (Jeff Shea) C - 78:18 - Brennan Regner (6) (Shea) C - 82:45 - Mike Delabar (17) C - 88:57 - Delabar (18) (Shea, Ben Foti) Shots at Goal: Catawba 17, Carson-Newman 15 Corner Kicks: Carson-Newman 8, Catawba 4 Goalkeeper Saves: Carson-Newman - Sanjay Roberts 6 Catawba - David Durham 5 Offsides: Carson-Newman 5, Catawba 4 Fouls: Carson-Newman 15, Catawba 12 Cautions: Carson-Newman - Powell (28'), McMillan (42'), Sundgot (65'); Catawba - Ro.Hudgins (70'), Shea (85') ATT: 202 #######
