Cox pours in 29 on Senior Day as Women's Basketball upsets Carson-NewmanSALISBURY, N.C. -- Senior guard Ashley Cox (Richmond, Va.), playing possibly her final home game on Senior Day, scored a season-high 29 points as Catawba upset visiting Carson-Newman 65-49 in South Atlantic Conference women’s basketball action on Saturday afternoon at Goodman Gym. The Lady Indians win their fourth straight game, improving to 15-10 overall and 6-6 in the SAC. The Lady Eagles fall to 19-6 and 9-3. Neither team could find their scoring touch in the early going. The game was tied at 4-4 after two minutes and the Lady Eagles would grab a 12-6 edge at the 10:57 mark. Catawba took its first lead at 15-14 on a pair of free throws by senior Jenny Volpicelli (Concord, N.C.) with 7:34 left in the opening half. Carson-Newman led once more, on a layup by Brittaney Gooch (Franklin, Ky.) at 16-15 with 7:02 left then Cox connected on the first of her five three-pointers on the night to give the Lady Indians the lead for good at 18-16 with 5:08 remaining. Catawba finished the half on a 14-2 run to take a 29-18 edge to the break. Cox had 12 of the 14 points and assisted on the other basket by senior Kendall Prescott (Exeter, N.H.). The Lady Eagles pulled within 31-25 early in the second half on a jumper by Amy Cate (Strawberry Plains, Tenn.), but Catawba went on an 18-2 run to break the game open. Cox hit consecutive threes to cap the run as she put the Lady Indians up 49-27 with her 25th point of the night at the 13:41 mark. Catawba stayed up by 15 or more the rest of the way. Cox was the only Lady Indian to reach double figures with her 29 points. Christina Carmon (Stafford, Va.), one of seven Catawba seniors, followed with nine, while senior Isiaette Darden (Wilson, N.C.) had five steals. The other two Tribe seniors are Stephanie Valentine (Charlotte, N.C.) and Julie Kaufman (Damascus, Md.). Carson-Newman was led by freshman Brooke Johnson (Seymour, Tenn.), who had 14 points. Tiffany Parker (Newnan, Ga.) had seven points and a game-high 10 rebounds. Catawba shot 50% for the second half and 42% for the game against the league’s top defense. C-N hit only 35%, and committed 26 turnovers. The Lady Eagles did hold a 41-29 edge on the boards. #####
