Carmon's 20, Cox's late three-pointers lift Women's Basketball to win over PC

CLINTON, S.C. -- Senior Ashley Cox (Richmond, Va.) hit a pair of late three-pointers and Catawba placed four players in double figures to defeat host Presbyterian 70-65 in South Atlantic Conference women’s basketball action on Saturday afternoon at Templeton Center.  The Lady Indians win their sixth straight and improve to 17-10 overall and 8-6 in the SAC.  Catawba will host Newberry on Wednesday in the opening round of the Food Lion SAC Tournament.  Presbyterian falls to 7-20 and 4-10.
Catawba held a seven-point lead with five minutes remaining, but the Blue Hose rallied and took the elad at 63-62 on a pair of free throws by Rebecca Wessinger (Laurens, S.C.) with 2:10 remaining.  Cox answered with a three pointer with 1:50 left and canned another with 30 seconds to play for a 68-63 lead.  Christina Carmon (Stafford, Va.) added a pair of free throws with 13 seconds to go to push the lead to 70-63.

The Lady Indians led 15-8 in the early minutes only to see Presbyterian rally and grab a 21-18 edge after a three-pointer by Amy Jones (Warthen, Ga.) at the 8:32 mark of the opening half.  Cox tied the score on a three pointer and Catawba ended the half on a 17-4 run to lead 35-25 at the break.

An early PC run to open the second half cut the Catawba edge to 40-38, but the Lady Indians would push the lead back to nine at 50-41 with 12:30 to go.  Catawba hit on 50% of its shots in the opening half to grab its double-digit cushion.  For the game, the Lady Indians shot 41% to just 36% for the Blue Hose.  The teams were even on the boards at 43 apiece with Catawba committing 21 turnovers to 20 for Presbyterian.

Carmon paced Catawba with 20 points, just one off her career high that she set on Wednesday in a win over league-leading Wingate.  Tameikia Foster (Chesapeake, Va.) followed with 13 points and joined Carmon with seven rebounds.  Cox and Isiaette Darden (Wilson, N.C.) each tossed in 11 points.  Wessinger had 26 in a losing effort for the Blue Hose and added eight boards.  Jones tallied 14 points and Brittany Carroll (Dunn, N.C.) had 12.
