Softball drops pair to ShippensburgSALISBURY, N.C. -- Catawba was swept by visiting Shippensburg in a softball doubleheader on Sunday afternoon at Whitley Field. The Raiders won by the scores of 2-0 and 12-9 to improve to 8-0 on the year. Catawba falls to 4-6. Shippensburg’s Kelley Tiesi (Baltimore, Md.) tossed a one-hitter in the opener and got the only offense she would need from Mary McKee (Bellefonte, Pa.) as the Raiders won the pitching duel 2-0. McKee hit a two-out, two-run homer off the left field foul pole in the second to account for the only runs of the game. Tiesi took a perfect game into the seventh, but Catawba’s Lyndsey Gay (Cleveland, N.C.) led off the frame with a bunt single. Gay would be the only baserunner for Catawba in the opener as Tiesi walked none and struck out six in the complete game win to improve to 4-0 on the year. Lindsey Ettinger (Pasadena, Md.) scattered seven hits over her seven innings with a walk and two strikeouts. The teams would combine for 21 runs and 27 in the second game with the Raiders taking the 12-9 decision. Shippensburg broke open a 5-3 game with a four-run fifth. Sarah Costa (Laurel, Md.) started the scoring with a home run, while McKee added a two-run single. Katie Phelps (Prince Frederick, Md.) cut the deficit to 9-5 with a two-run homer for Catawba in the sixth, but the Raiders tacked on three in the seventh for a 12-5 lead. The Lady Indians made the game close thanks to a two-run triple by Jessica Rivera (Key West, Fla.). Costa had three hits and three RBI for Shippensburg in the nightcap. Rivera had a pair of hits for Catawba. #####
