Softball settles for split with Lake Superior St.

SALISBURY, N.C. -- Catawba and visiting Lake Superior State split a softball doubleheader on Tuesday afternoon at Whitley Field. Catawba took the opener 9-2, while the Lakers rallied to take game two 3-2. The Lady Indians now stand at 5-7, while LSSU is 2-5. Freshman Lyndsey Gay (Cleveland, N.C.) collected four hits and scored a pair of runs to spark Catawba in the opener. Gay led off the first with a single and scored on a double by Stacey Handy (Advance, N.C.). Freshman Lacey Waldroop (Franklin, N.C.) hit a two-run homer later in the frame for a 3-0 lead. The Lakers cut the deficit to a run in the third on a pair of sacrifice flies, but Catawba responded with six of its own in the third to break the game open. Liz Corbett (Severn, Md.) got the inning rolling with a three-run double. Ashlee Rhoades (China Grove, N.C.), Gay and Handy also had RBI in the inning. Lindsay Ettinger (Pasadena, Md.) earned the win, allowing no earned runs on four hits with three strikeouts. Catawba led 2-0 in game two before the Lakers rallied in the seventh. Gay took a shutout into the last inning, but LSSU got a two-out, two-run single by Erin Retherford (Wixom, Mich.) to tie the game. Sarah Demmer (Lincoln Park, Mich.) delivered the game-winning single, one of her three hits in the nightcap. Catawba got on the board in the fourth as Rhoades singled home Jenn Mehl (West Creek, N.J.), who led off the inning with a triple. Katie Phelps (Prince Frederick, Md.) singled home a run in the fifth. Freshman Meagan Kittle (Winchester, Ontario, CANADA) collected three hits for Catawba, while Phelps and Waldroop had two. #####
