Women's Basketball ends season with opening round loss to NewberrySALISBURY, N.C. -- Fifth-seeded Newberry knocked off host and fourth-seed Catawba 73-59 in an opening round game of the Food Lion South Atlantic Conference Women’s Basketball Tournament at Goodman Gym on Wednesday night. Newberry improves to 18-10 overall and advances to play top-seeded Wingate in one of Saturday’s semifinals. Catawba ends its season at 17-11. It also ended a 19-game winning streak by Catawba over Newberry.
Newberry jumped to a 17-10 lead in the opening 10 minutes, but a 17-2 Catawba run helped the hosts to a 32-28 lead at the break. The teams were tied at 48-48 with just under 10 minutes to play when Taquala Cooks (Lithonia, Ga.) got a steal and layup to give Newberry the lead for good with 9:25 left. Newberry would build its lead to 10 at 60-50 with 6:38 to go and Catawba never got closer than six the rest of the way.
Newberry held a 48-37 edge on the boards and canned 23-of-35 (66%) from the line to hold off Catawba. Catawba hit just 12-of-26 (46%) from the stripe. Catawba also hit just 36% from the field and only 30% in the second half.
Tonique Frasier (Walterboro, S.C.) led Newberry with 21 points, while Carnicha Bellinger (Greenville, S.C.) had 14 points and 13 rebounds. Monica Alexander (Norcorss, Ga.) also hit double digits with 11 points and had five steals. Ashley Cox (Richmond, Va.) had 16 points to pace Catawba, while Isiaette Darden (Wilson, N.C.) added 14.
