Men's Basketball runs away from Newberry
SALISBURY, N.C. -- Top-seeded overpowered Newberry in the second half and went on to record an 84-53 victory in opening round action of the Food Lion South Atlantic Conference Menís Basketball Tournament on Wednesday afternoon at Goodman Gym. Catawba improves to 23-5 overall and advance to face #4-seed Tusculum in one of Saturdayís semifinals. Newberry ends its season at 9-20.
Although Newberry never led, the visitors were within three inside the final minute of the opening half before a three-pointer by Helgi Magnusson (Reykjavik, ICELAND) put Catawba up 32-26 at the break. Catawba led just 34-32 early in the second when it exploded on a 27-6 to put the game away, grabbing a 61-38 lead with 10 minutes to play.
Catawba shot 58% in the second half and finished at 50% for the game to just 27% for Newberry. Catawba also held a 45-39 edge on the boards. Magnusson scored 15 points for Catawba, while Brian Graves
(Newport News, Va.) added 14. Chris Wooldridge (Norfolk, Va.) posted a double-double with 13 points and 10 rebounds. Tymere Zimmerman (Bennettsville, S.C.) was the only Newberry player in double figures with 10.
