Baseball falls in 11 at St. AndrewsLAURINBURG, N.C. -- Stewart Redding’s (Laurinburg, N.C.) two-out single in the bottom of the 11th drove in Anthony Mehling (Pottsville, Pa.) as St. Andrews defeated visiting Catawba 3-2 in baseball action on Wednesday afternoon at Clark Field. The win improves the Knights to 8-9, while the Indians fall to 12-9. The game started out as a pitchers duel between St. Andrews freshman right hander B.J. Horne (Hamlet, N.C.) and Catawba sophomore southpaw Paul Link (Cleveland, N.C.). Link allowed only two hits in his first five innings of work before walking the Knights leadoff hitter Ritchie Priest (Elizabethtown, N.C.) in the sixth. Priest stole second and scored on a two-out Mehling single to left field. Horne seemed in control retiring 18 of the first 20 Indians batters but the 1-0 lead was short lived. Matt Baker (Charlotte, N.C.) led off the Indian seventh with a single and Jimbo Davis (Salisbury, N.C.) followed with a two-run homer around the right-field foul poll. The Knights tied everything at two apiece in the bottom half of the seventh. Redding and Cliff Allred (Franklinville, N.C.) started the rally with one-out singles to put base runners on the corners and Brad Smith drove in Redding with a fielder’s choice. The contest remained deadlocked at two until the bottom of the 11th. Mehling led off with a walk and was moved over to second on a sacrifice bunt by Everett Kelly (Wilmington, N.C.). The Indians got the second out, but Redding came through with his third single of the game. The base hit was deep enough to bring Mehling home from second without a throw by the right fielder. Reliever T.J. Chrusch (Fleetwood, Pa.) picked up his third win of the season after pitching 3 1/3 innings of scoreless relief for Horne. Chrusch allowed one hit and two walks while Zach Evans (Greensboro, N.C.) took the loss. Chrusch and Evans each had seven strikeouts. Baker collected three of Catawba’s seven hits, while Thomas Giles (Lynchburg, Va.) had two. #####
