Ettinger sets strikeout record as Softball takes two from IUPSALISBURY, N.C. -- Catawba sophomore Lindsay Ettinger (Pasadena, Md.) struck out a school-record 14 batters in the opener and helped the Lady Indians to a sweep of visiting Indiana, PA, in softball action on Thursday afternoon at Whitley Field. Catawba won by the scores of 9-0 and 7-3 to improve to 7-7, while IUP falls to 0-2. Ettinger allowed a leadoff single by Becky Lewis (Cranberry Township, Pa.) then sat down 17 straight, 14 by strikeout, before Lewis singled again in the sixth. It was the only two times an IUP runner reached base. It was the first shutout of the season for Catawba. Catawba got plenty of offense in the opener. Lyndsey Gay (Cleveland, N.C.) singled in the first and later scored on an error for the only run Ettinger would need. Meagan Kittle (Winchester, Ontario, CANADA) homered in the third with Jessica Rivera (Key West, Fla.) and Liz Corbett (Severn, Md.) also getting RBI in the three-run frame. Rivera ended the game in the sixth with a three-run home run. She led the Catawba at the plate with three hits, coming on two triples and the homer, and collected four RBI. Lewis had both IUP hits in the opener. IUP took the early lead in game two. Katey Reed (Shippensburg, Pa.) led off the third with a double and scored on a single by Kerri Hiles (Dawson, Pa.). Rivera tied the game in the Catawba third with a sacrifice fly. Catawba broke the game open in the fourth, scoring six unearned runs, capped by a grand slam by Lacey Waldroop (Frankin, N.C.). The visiting Indians got single runs in the sixth and seventh. Reed and Lewis had back-to-back doubles to account for the final run. Ettinger got the win in relief of game two, upping her record to 5-4. She added eight more strikeouts in four and two-thirds innings of work. She now has 40 strikeouts and just three walks in just under 63 innings of work. Waldroop, Gay and Stacey Handy (Advance, N.C.) had two hits for Catawba in the nightcap. Hiles and Reed had two hits for IUP. #####
