Football back in playoffs

SALISBURY, NC -- Catawba, ranked ninth in the AFCA Coaches Poll, earned a consecutive out-right South Atlantic Conference Football Championship with a 31-14 win over Lenoir-Rhyne on Saturday afternoon at Shuford Stadium. The win improves the Indians to 9-1 overall and 6-1 in the SAC and virtually assures Catawba a third straight NCAA Division II playoff berth. Lenoir-Rhyne ends its season at 3-7 and 2-5. It is the first back-to-back football titles since the late 1940s.Lenoir-Rhyne had a chance to take the early lead, diving inside the Catawba 10-yard line on its second possession. Bryce Rieger (Orlando, FL) attempted a 20-yard field goal, but it was blocked by Darris Morris (Batesburg, SC) to keep the game scoreless. The Indians would then march 80 yards to take the lead. The key play was a 68-yard strike from freshman quarterback Luke Samples (Elkin, NC) to Nick Means (Thomasville, NC) on third-and-18 to set the Tribe up on the Bear 20. Freshman Rodney Wallace (Bamberg, SC) would carry in from 14 yards out, three plays later, for the lead. The Indians would turn the ball over on its next two series, but mid-way through the second Samples tossed a 15-yard pass to senior Mark Sintich (Lawrenceville, GA) to give Catawba a 14-0 edge. Lenoir-Rhyne closed with in a touchdown late in the half, capitalizing on a Catawba interception with a 16-yard pass from Bret Johnson (Sterling, VA) to Matthew Harrell (Tallapoosa, GA) with just 55 seconds left. Catawba would close out the half on a 34-yard field goal by Matt Gross (Hendersonville, NC). It was set up by a 40-yard strike from Samples to Arnold Gaither (Turnersburg, NC). Catawba opened the second half with a 14-play, 92-yard drive, which ended on a Marcus Bland (Garner, NC) one-yard plunge. During the drive, Wallace set a new freshman rushing record, finishing the regular season with 816 yards. Jamiel Surratt (Forest City, NC) cut the margin to 24-14 with just over five minutes to play on a six-yard run, but Wallace answered with a seven-yard run with 2:09 left to ice the issue. Catawba was led by Wallace, who ran for 87 yards and two scores. Samples threw for 256 yards, completing 21-of-32 passes for one score. Cedric Squirewell (Ridgeway, SC) led the receiving corps with nine catches for 64 yards. Surratt led the Bears, rushing for 173 yards and a score. Johnson, who came in for the injured Brett Johnson (Ocala, FL), completed 17-of-31 passes for 160 yards. .
