Baseball takes final game of weekend series at Wingate

WINGATE, N.C. -- Catawba took the rubber-game in a three-game series with Wingate, winning 5-3 in South Atlantic Conference baseball action on Sunday afternoon at Christopher Stadium. The Indians improve to 14-10 overall and 2-1 in the SAC, while Wingate falls to 7-16 and 1-2. Catawba picked up single runs in the opening three innings to take the early lead. Freshman David Thomas (Winston-Salem, N.C.) led off the game with a homer and drove home the second-inning run on a ground out. Matt Smith (Browns Summitt, N.C.) singled home Aaron Rimer (Salisbury, N.C.) with two outs in the third for the 3-0 lead. Wingate picked up a run in its half of the third as Shaughn Neal drove home a run with a ground out. The Bulldogs tied the score in the fourth on a two-out, two-run double by Keith Benton. The Indians would take the lead back in the seventh as Zach Evans (Greensboro, N.C.) led off with a single and scored on a double by Matt Baker (Charlotte, N.C.) Catawba got an insurance run in the eighth when Nick Lefko (Faith, N.C.) singled home Smith, who had reached on an error to open the inning. Evans and Lefko had two hits for Catawba. Smith improved to 3-1 on the mound as he tossed seven innings and allowed three runs on eight hits. He walked one and struck out three. Evans picked up his fourth save with two innings of one-hit ball. He walked one and recorded five strikeouts. ######
