Bats stay hot as Baseball completes sweep of #14 West Florida

PENSACOLA, FL - Catawba polished off West Florida tonight by sweeping a day-night doubleheader from the Argos, 5-1, and 12-3. In impressive fashion, the Indians won all three games from UWF in the two-day series. In game one, West Florida got off to a solid start by grabbing a 1-0 lead in the first inning. Matt Wood singled with one out, and later scored on a Jacob Whisenhunt double. Peter Antoske was thrown out at home on the play by left fielder Matt Kepley. Catawba tied the game at 1-1 in the third inning on a Nick Lefko solo homerun, the first Catawba hit off UWF starter Josh Sawyer. The Indians took the lead for good in the fifth inning by scoring two runs. Kepley picked up an RBI on a ground out, and Lefko followd with an RBI single. Matt Smith had an RBI single in the sixth, and Chad Baker connected on an RBI single in the eighth for insurance. Catawba starter Tim Smith got the win for the Indians. Smith tossed eight-and-two-thirds, allowing just one run on five hits. Zach Evans recorded the save. Sawyer (2-3) was saddled with loss. He threw seven innings, allowing four runs on eight hits. The flood gates opened in game two, as UWF fell behind, 12-0, through four-and-a-half innings. Just four of Catawba's runs were earned. Catawba's lead off batter David Thomas went 4-for-5, with an RBI. Jimbo Davis was 2-for-4, with a pair of RBI, and a homerun. Matt Baker also went 2-for-4, with two RBI, and a double. Indians starter Jeff Abdelnour got credit for win by tossing five innings. He allowed one earned run on seven hits. Catawba used five pitchers in the winning effort. West Florida starter Kyle Ramsey (1-3) recieved the loss in four innngs of work. He allowed three earned runs on seven hits. The Indians did the majority of their damage in the fifth inning off UWF reliever Daniel Carter. Catawba scored seven runs in the decisive inning. Just one of those runs were earned. Sawyer, Carter, and reliever Richie Brantley combined for 10 walks. Chris Gormley and Josh Mayfield each went 2-for-4, with an RBI. Wood also recorded a run batted in for UWF. The 14th ranked Argos drop to 14-10, while Catawba improves their record to 17-10.
