Softball continues solid play at FMU TournamentCatawba won three of five games over the weekend at the Patriot Invitational Tournament, hosted by Francis Marion University at the Freedom Florence Park. The Lady Indians opened with a 10-9 win over Armstrong Atlantic on Friday, but fell 2-1 to Augusta State and 5-3 to tenth-ranked Francis Marion on Saturday. The Lady Indians rebounded on Sunday to defeat Bluefield State 4-1 and Goldey Beacom 3-1 on Sunday. Catawba is now 14-12 on the year.Freshman Jacqueline White (Mt. Ulla, NC) keyed the win over Armstrong with a pair of hits and six RBI. Her grand slam in the fifth inning put Catawba up 9-5. Lindsey Ettinger (Pasadena, MD) went the distance to improve to 10-5. Stacey Handy (Advance, NC), Lacey Waldroop (Franklin, NC) and Jessica Rivera (Key West, FL) also had two hits for the Lady Indians. On Saturday, the Lady Indians jumped out to a 1-0 lead against Augusta State as Lyndsey Gay (Cleveland, NC) led off the first with a single and later stole third and scored on a wild pitch. The Jaguards got single runs in the third and fourth to take the lead. Catawba had the tying run in scoring position in the sixth and seventh, but couldn’t score. Gay had two hits for Catawba, while Shannon Handy (Advance, NC) surrendered just four hits in taking the loss. Nationally-ranked Francis Marion rallied for three runs in the seventh to get the 5-3 win over Catawba. Waldroop’s sacrifice fly in the first gave Catawba an early 2-0 lead and a RBI single by Rivera in the third put the Lady Indians up 3-0. The Patriots battled back to trim the deficit to 3-2 heading into the seventh and benefited from a Tribe error to score the winning runs. Ettinger allowed only five hits and one unearned run with six strikeouts in the 4-1 win over Bluefield State. Rivera tied the game in the bottom of the first with a two-our RBI double and Waldroop provided the winning hit with a walk-off three-run homer in the eighth. The home run set a new school record with her sixth on the year. Shannon Handy had two hits and tossed a four-hitter to gain the final win over Goldey Beacom. She had eight strikeouts. Rivera and Liz Corbett (Severn, MD) also had two hits. Rivera had a RBI single in the first and Katie Phelps (Prince Frederick MD) gave the Lady Indians a 2-0 edge with a single in the third. On Thursday, Catawba dropped a pair of close games to 12th-ranked Bloomsburg, falling 3-2 and 8-6 in eight innings. Bloomsburg had three solo home runs in the opener, including a sixth-inning blast by Tina Jennosa to snap a 2-2 tie. Waldroop had tied the score in the fifth with a two-out, two-run double. White had three hits in the loss. Gay had three hits in game two and scored the go-ahead run in the fourth as the Lady Indians went up 6-5. Waldroop added two more RBI in the game-two defeat. #####
