Softball gets split in DH at Mt. Olive

MOUNT OLIVE, NC -- Catawba and host Mount Olive split a softball doubleheader on Tuesday afternoon. Mount Olive won the opener 5-4 in 10 innings, while Catawba claimed a 7-0 win in game two. Catawba now stands at 15-13 on the year.The Trojans scored an unearned in the fifth inning of the opener to grab a 1-0 lead. Katie Phelps (Prince Frederick, MD) tied the score for Catawba in the sixth with a two-out single. Each team scored twice in the eighth. Shannon Handy (Advance, NC) and Phelps had two-out RBI hits for the Lady Indians, while Ashley Napoles tied the score with a two-out double for Mount Olive. Neither team scored in the ninth, while the Trojans got the winning run on an error in the tenth. Phelps led the Lady Indians offense with two hits, while Lindsay Ettinger (Pasadena, MD) tossed a complete game, allowing seven hits and one earned run with five strikeouts. Shannon Handy tossed a one-hitter to pick up the shutout in game two. She walked one and hit one batter. Jacqueline White (Mt. Ulla, NC) and Jessica Rivera (Key West, FL) got Catawba rolling in the first with a RBI each. The Lady Indians added three more in the second, one on a single by Jessica Hull (Deptford, NJ) and two more on a double by White. Stacey Handy (Advance, NC) had three hits for Catawba in the nightcap. #####
