Matt Baker homers twice as Baseball splits DH at NewberryNEWBERRY, SC -- Catawba and host Newberry split a South Atlantic Conference baseball doubleheader on Saturday afternoon at Kirkland Field. Catawba took a 7-5 win in the opener, while Newberry won the nightcap 4-2. Catawba, ranked 24th in NCAA II, now stands at 21-11 overall and 6-2 in the SACm while Newberry is 8-18 and 1-7. Matt Fairweather tossed eight innings to earn the game one win for Catawba. He allowed five runs on seven hits with no walks and three strikeouts. Matt Baker (Charlotte, NC) and Jimbo Davis (Salisbury, NC) hit back-to-back homers with two outs in the first inning to stake the Tribe to an early lead. Davis ignited a five-run sixth inning for Catawba with a two-run double. After the big sixth inning gave Catawba a 7-1 edge, Newberry fought back with a pair of runs in its sixth and seventh innings with the last two coming on a two-run homer by Ryan Easterby. Zach Evans (Greensboro, NC) allowed a lead-off single in the night then struck out the side for his eighth save. Baker would stake Catawba to a 2-0 lead in the opening inning of game two with a two-run homer, but Newberry touched up the Tribe for three of its own in the opening frame. Anthony Dillenger tied the score on a two-run homer after a lead-off single by Jamall Kinard. Catawba loaded the bases in the second, but failed to score and got only one runner in scoring position the rest of the way. Pat Egleston earned the win in relief for Newberry as he allowed just one hit over the final three innings with six strikeouts. David Thomas (Winston-Salem, NC) and Baker had two hits for Catawba in the nightcap. Baker also had two hits in the opener, while Davis had a pair of hits and three RBI in game one. ######
