Baseball falls to Newberry 5-3

NEWBERRY, SC -- Host Newberry defeated Catawba 5-3 in South Atlantic Conference baseball action on Sunday afternoon at Kirkland Field. Newberry improves to 10-18 overall and 2-7 in the SAC, while the 24th-ranked Indians fall to 21-12 and 6-3. Jimbo Davis (Salisbury, NC) put Catawba on top in the opening inning with a RBI-single, but Newberry struck for two in its first, getting RBI singles by T.J. McCord and Josh Buckley. Catawba would tie the game in the fourth as Zach Evans (Greensboro, NC) led off with a triple and scored on a single by Casey Morris (Granite Falls, NC). Newberry took the lead back in the sixth on a bases-loaded, two-out infield hit by Anthony Dillenger. Catawba put two runners on in the seventh, but a double play ended the threat. Newberry added two runs in the eighth on a two-run homer by Dillenger. Catawba loaded the bases with one out in the ninth and Aaron Rimer (Salisbury, NC) forced home a run with a walk, but an infield fly and strikeout ended the game. Will Folk earned the win in relief for Newberry as he entered in the fourth and tossed five innings of four-hit ball and allowed just one run. Davis had three hits for Catawba, while Morris and Matt Kepley (Greensboro, NC) each had two. Dillenger had three hits and three RBI for Newberry. ######
