Softball falls twice to #14 North Florida

SALISBURY, NC -- Catawba dropped both ends of a doubleheader to 14th-ranked North Florida in softball action on Monday afternoon at Whitley Field. The Ospreys won by the scores of 5-1 and 3-1 to improve to 25-5 on the year. Catawba falls to 17-17. A lead-off homer by Kelli Rutenbar (Lakeland, FL) in the second put North Florida up 1-0 in the opener. In the third, Jessica Sexton (Jacksonville, FL) led off with a double and scored on an ensuing two-bagger by Ashley Parenteau (Palm Beach Gardens, FL). A RBI single by Laura Hanstein (Ft. Lauderdale, FL) gave UNF a 3-0 edge. Catawba got its lone run in the sixth as the Lady Indians picked up three straight hits with two outs to put the tying run on base. Stacey Handy (Advance, NC) got the rally started. She moved to second on a wild pitch and scored on a hit by Jacqueline White (Mt. Ulla, NC). Lacey Waldroop (Franklin, NC) followed with a single, but Tori Ahern (Wellington, FL) got the final out of the frame on a strikeout then struck out the side in the seventh to improve to 14-2. Ahern allowed one run on five hits with eight strikeouts. Catawba’s Lindsay Ettinger (Pasadena, MD) scattered nine hits and struck out five. Stacey Handy and White each had two hits. Hanstein had three hits for UNF as she added a two-out, two-run homer in the seventh. Parenteau led off game two with a single, moved to third on a sacrifice and scored on a wild pitch for an early 1-0 Osprey lead in the nightcap. North Florida added two runs in the fifth, getting a RBI-single by Megan Hendrix (Jacksonville, FL) and another run on a passed ball. The Lady Indians broke up the shutout in the seventh and put the tying run on base with two outs. Waldroop singled with one out and Jessica Rivera (Key West, FL) reached on an error. After a second out, Amanda Mitchell (Huntington, MD) singled home Waldroop, but Kelli Pitts (Jacksonville, FL) got the final out with a strikeout. Pitts allowed just one unearned run off four hits. She had seven strikeouts in moving to 1-0 on the year. Shannon Handy (Advance, NC) also allowed just four hits with two of the runs against her being earned. Stacey Handy had two hits for Catawba, going 4-for-6 in the doubleheader. #####
