Baseball takes spilt with LR in Saturday twinbill

SALISBURY, NC -- Catawba and visiting Lenoir-Rhyne split a doubleheader in South Atlantic Conference baseball action on Saturday afternoon at Newman Park. Catawba rolled to a 13-4 win in the opener, while the Bears took an 8-2 decision in the nightcap. The Indians are now 23-13 overall and 8-4 in the SAC, while Lenoir-Rhyne stands at 19-16 and 4-8. Junior Matt Smith (Browns Summit, NC) collected three hits and four RBI in the opener to lead the Tribe. Jimbo Davis (Salisbury, NC) got Catawba going with a RBI double in the first as the Indians would take a 3-0 lead. Catawba got two more runs in the second and Smith connected on a two-run homer in the third to push the lead to 7-2. Matt Baker (Charlotte, NC) and Aaron Rimer (Salisbury, NC) also homered for Catawba to back eight innings on the mound from Jeff Abdelnour (Cohoes, NY). The senior allowed just five hits and two runs to improve to 6-2 on the year. William Doyle (Delray Beach, FL) had two pinch-hit, two-run homer for the Bears in the ninth. Derek Pugh (Asheboro, NC) put the Bears on top in game two with a two-out, two-run single in the second. The Bears would break the game open with a six-run fifth. John Pugh (Asheboro, NC) capped the frame with a two-run double. Catawba broke up a no-hit bid in the fifth with a two-out single by Bubba Morris (Salisbury, NC). Bear hurler Jesse Jordan (Englewood, FL) would go the distance and allowed just three hits and one earned run. John Pugh had three hits for the Bears, while Derek Pugh and Taylor MacCurdy (Charlotte, NC) each had two. ######
