Bellarmine handles Lacrosse 15-8Louisville, Ky.– The Bellarmine lacrosse team improved to 7-1 in their inaugural season by defeating visiting Catawba College, 15-8, at Knights Field today. Bellarmine scored the first ten goals of the game to set up the victory. Freshman Shawn Evans and junior Garret Kikot combined for five of the Knights first six goals of the game helping their team pounce on the Indians (2-6) early. An unreleasable penalty on Catawba’s Craig Emory late in the period allowed Bellarmine to score two man-up goals in the final three minutes of the term, and by the end of the first period, a shell-shocked Catawba found themselves down 8-0. Bellarmine’s Cameron Adams scored the first goal of the second session and Evans followed it up with his third tally of the game to put the Knights up 10-0 halfway through the period. Catawba finally got on the scoreboard with 3:24 left in the half on a Jason Collier goal, as Bellarmine went into the break up 10-1. A rejuvenated Catawba team, though, took the field in the second half. Kurt Green scored two quick goals to start the half, before penalties again allowed the Knights to score twice more in man-up opportunities. Coach Jack McGetrick replaced BU goalie JC Hutchens at the start of the fourth period, after he saved five shots on the day. Replacement Brad Pillen allowed four goals in the final period as Catawba out-scored Bellarmine 7-5 in the second half. Kikot finished the day with five goals and two assists, while Evans added four goals and two assists. Adams also scored three times. Catawba was led by Matt Riley with three goals and Green with two. Bellarmine came out ahead on face-offs, 18-8, and took 36 ground balls to Catawba’s 25.
