Smith named SAC Baseball Pitcher of the WeekROCK HILL, S.C. -— Mars Hill shortstop Joe Castagner and Catawba starting pitcher Matt Smith were named South Atlantic Conference Player and Pitcher of the Week, respectively, the league announced Monday afternoon. Smith, a junior from Browns Summit, N.C., pitched two gems en route to a 2-0 record. Smith allowed just one run on three hits with seven strikeouts in a 5-1 win over St. Andrews on Monday. On Sunday, Smith combined on a shutout of No. 11 Tusculum, pitching six innings of three-hit ball with no walks. He allowed just six hits in 13 innings of work with eight strikeouts and one walk in two appearances. For the season, Smith has compiled an impressive 6-2 record on the mound and lowered his ERA to a team-best 3.41. Castagner, a senior from Bushnell, Fla., hit .667 on the week with six RBIs. He knocked in the game winning run in the Lions’ 3-2 win against SAC rival Carson-Newman on Sunday. In the five games this past week, Castagner recorded a .867 slugging percentage and a .667 on base percentage. Castagner is hitting .432 on the year. The SAC Player of the Week is determined by a vote of the eight sports information directors in the league. #####
