Softball sweeps Wingate in dramatic fashionSALISBURY, NC -- Catawba won both games of a South Atlantic Conference softball doubleheader from visiting Wingate in dramatic fashion on Tuesday afternoon at Whitley Field. The Lady Indians won the opener 6-5 in eight innings and took game two 2-0. Catawba improves to 21-19 overall and 4-2 in the SAC, while the Bulldogs fall to 24-10 and 4-4. Catawba scored twice in the eighth inning of the opener for the 6-5 victory and won the nightcap on Katie Phelps’ (Prince Frederick, MD) two-run homer in the sixth. Catawba rallied from a 4-0 deficit in the opener. Wingate scored all four of its first-game runs in the fifth inning. The Bulldogs loaded the bases with one out on three infield singles. Grace Cunningham (Camden, SC) drove home the first run with a fielder’s choice and Carey Bumgardner (Mechanicsville, PA) followed with a RBI single. Sarah Carleton (Pawhatan, VA) doubled home the final two runs. Catawba would respond with four of its own in the fifth. Stacey Handy (Advance, NC) drove home a run with a two-out, bases-loaded single and Jacqueline White (Mt. Ulla, NC) followed with a three-run double to tie the score. Cameron Langston (Goldsboro, NC) gave the Bulldogs a lead in the eighth with a one-out single, but Catawba would rally again. White reached on a bunt to put runners on the corners and Jessica Rivera (Key West, FL) tied the score with a single. Lacey Waldroop (Franklin, NC) followed with a game-winning single to center. The second game was a pitcher’s duel between Wingate’s Lauren Powell (Midlothian, VA) and Catawba’s Shannon Handy (Advance, NC). Shannon Handy would get the win, surrendering a mere two hits with a walk and three strikeouts. Powell allowed five hits with two walks and eight strikeouts. Shannon Handy sat down the first 12 Bulldog batters before a leadoff single by Langston in the fifth. Wingate threatened in the sixth, putting the first two runners on, but Amanda Mitchell (Huntingtown, MD) snagged a line drive down the right field line and turned into a triple play to end the inning. In the Catawba sixth, Liz Corbett (Severn, MD) doubled with two outs, ending a stretch of 10 straight retired batters by Powell. Phelps followed with her two-run blast to center with a 3-2 count. #####
