Softball drops a pair to 20th-ranked Carson-Newman

JEFFERSON CITY, TN -- The 20th-ranked Carson-Newman Lady Eagles swept a South Atlantic Conference softball doubleheader from visiting Catawba on Saturday afternoon at the C-N softball complex. The two teams battled through four scoreless innings in the opener until the Lady Eagles posted a seven-run fifth. Kim Thorne (Dalton, Ga.) singled down the left field line and was replaced by Tiffany Seals (Jefferson City, Tenn.). Lauren LcKaig (Trenton, Ga.) tripled to left to bring Seals home. LeAndrea Johnson (Chattanooga, Tenn.) singled to center to plate McKaig for the game’s second run. Johnson stole second and third base and scored on a squeeze. Lisa Rogers (Rossville, Ga.) singled to right to score two runs and Whitney Hickam (Knoxville, Tenn.) had a two-run pinch hit single to make it 7-0. The Lady Indians got on the scoreboard in the sixth when Lacey Waldroop (Franklin, N.C.) tripled to right field to bring Jacqueline White (Mt. Ulla, N.C.), but the Lady Eagles scored two runs in the bottom of the sixth inning to end the contest. Rogers was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded and Howard singled to left to produce the 9-1 final in game one. The Lady Indians struck first in game two. White singled to right to bring home Stacey Handy (Advance, N.C.) in the first inning to give Catawba a 1-0 lead. The Lady Eagles responded in the home half of the first by scoring five runs. Rogers belted a two-run triple to right to highlight the five-run explosion for C-N. The Indians got two of the runs back in the fifth. Waldroop drew a bases-loaded walk and White singled with the bases loaded to bring home Meagan Kittle (Winchester, Ont.) to make the score 5-3. Johnson led off the bottom of the fifth inning with an inside-the-park homerun down the left field line to push the C-N advantage back to 6-3.
