Baseball takes two from Carson-Newman; moves into first-place tie atop SAC

SALISBURY, NC- Senior Thomas Giles (Lynchburg, VA) went 3-for-7 with a solo-HR and four RBI leading Catawba College to a doubleheader sweep of visiting Carson-Newman on Saturday afternoon in South Atlantic Conference baseball action at Newman Park. The Indians took game one by a final score of 8-3, while coming from behind to win the night cap 8-4. The Tribe move to 28-15 overall, 11-5 in conference play and move into a first-place tie with Tusculum. The Eagles fall to 23-19 and 9-7.In the opener, Catawba struck first with a three-spot in the second. Giles and Nick Lefko (Faith, NC) picked up RBI-singles while Zach Evans (Greensboro, NC) picked up the other RBI with a groundout to second base. Aaron Rimer (Salisbury, NC) added a run with a RBI groundout in the third for the Tribe. Carson-Newman scored three un the sixth as Bryce Thomas (Ringgold, GA) smacked a RBI-double, right before Brian Chapman (Tazewell, TN) sent a two-run shot down the left-field line, his first of three homeruns on the day. The Indians put the game away with runs in the sixth and eighth as Giles hit his solo-HR in the sixth, while Jimbo Davis (Salisbury, NC) smoked a RBI-single in the eighth. Matt Fairweather (Lenoir, NC) pitched the complete game, allowing three runs on five hits picking up his sixth win of the season. Steve Cishek (East Falmouth, MA) fell to 2-2. Chapman and the Eagles didnít waste anytime striking first in game two. With runners at first and second and one out, Chapman sent a towering homerun to left-field giving CN an early 3-0. Catawba finally answered with four in the fourth as Davis sent a two-run blast to right cutting the lead to 3-2. Lefko gave Catawba a 4-3 lead, fisting a two-out, two-run single to left. The Indians put another four-spot on the board in the fifth as Matt Baker (Charlotte, NC) and Rimer each knocked in a run, before another two-out, two-run single off the bat of Giles. Tim Smith (Walnut Cove, NC) relieved starter Jeff Abdelnour (Cohoes, NY) in the fifth, getting a fly-out to right with two outs and runners at first and second. Carson-Newman threatened by loading the bases with no outs in the sixth, before Evans struck out the next three hitters retiring the side. Chapman tried to mount a CN comeback in the seventh sending another blast over the left-field wall, but it wasnít enough as Evans shut the door on the Eagles preserving the win for Smith.
