Baseball sweeps Eagles; stand alone in first-place

SALISBURY, NC- Catawba College jumped on Carson-Newman early on Sunday afternoon as the 25th-ranked Indians put up ten runs in the first frame en route to a 15-6 win and a sweep of the Eagles in South Atlantic Conference baseball action at Newman Park. With the win, Catawba stands alone atop the SAC standings at 12-5 in conference play, 29-15 overall. The Eagles drop to 23-20, 9-8 in the SAC. The first eight hitters reached based for the Tribe in the opening inning. Highlights of the inning were a three-run homerun to left-center by Jimbo Davis (Salisbury, NC) and a grand slam by right-fielder Nick Lefko (Faith, NC). Matt Smith (Browns Summitt, NC) and Matt Baker (Charlotte, NC) each went 2-for-2 in the inning. Smith, who went 4-for-5 with a double at the plate, tossed seven innings of three hit ball, allowing one run, picking up his seventh win of the season. Chad Baker (Jamestown, NC) had an RBI-single to plate Aaron Rimer (Salisbury, NC) in a two-run fourth for the Tribe. Two more runs were put up in the fifth as Rimer blasted a solo shot to center, while David Thomas (Winston-Salem, NC) singled in Lefko with the other Tribe run. Lefko, who was 4-for-5 on the day with 5 RBI, picked up his final RBI in the seventh scoring Matt Baker. Thomas, Matt Baker and Rimer each had a pair of hits for the Indians. The Eagles were able to put up a five-spot in the ninth as Nick Achberger (Anderson, SC) capped the frame with a two-run single to right. Kyle Beall (Baton Rouge, LA) finished the day 3-for-4 with an RBI leading CN. ######
