White's key hits help propel Softball to sweep of Lenoir-RhyneSALISBURY, NC -- Catawba picked up a pair of one-run wins to sweep a South Atlantic Conference softball doubleheader from visiting Lenoir-Rhyne on Friday afternoon at Whitley Field. The Lady Indians scored a run in the bottom of the sixth to take the opener 4-3 and rallied for three runs with two outs in the seventh inning of the nightcap for a 3-2 win. Catawba improves to 23-21 overall and 6-4 in the SAC, while the Bears fall to 30-14-1 and 6-6. Lenoir-Rhyne plated a pair of unearned runs in the third inning of the opener to snap a scoreless tie. A two-out error was followed by RBI singles from Taylor Queen (Conover, NC) and Karie Pushard (Harrisonburg, NC). Catawba answered in its third with three runs, also benefiting from errors. Stacey Handy (Advance, NC) and Liz Corbett (Severn, MD) collected consecutive two-out and Jessica Rivera’s (Key West, FL) followed up with a RBI double, with Corbett scoring on a bad throw. A second Bear error in the frame allowed Rivera to score. A two-out pinch-hit single by Meredith Ebert (Matthews, NC) in the sixth allowed Lenoir-Rhyne to tie the game at 3-3, but again Catawba answered. Jacqueline White (Mt. Ulla, NC) led off the frame with a double and pinch-runner Jessica Hull (Westfield, NJ) was sacrificed to third where she scored on Lindsay Ettinger’s (Pasadena, MD) one-out single. Ettinger earned the win on the mound with a complete game effort to improve to 17-13. She allowed just one earned run off seven hits. Kristin Duvall (Pasadena, MD) took a shutout into the seventh inning for the Bears in the nightcap, but Catawba struck for three runs to take the win. Stacey Handy, who earlier had her school-record streak of eight straight hits snapped, doubled with one out and Rivera drew a two a walk to put runners at first and third. White would lace the first pitch she saw for a triple down the right field line to tie the score at 2-2. Lacey Waldroop (Franklin, NC) hit the next pitch down the left field line for the game-winning single. Lenoir-Rhyne scored a run in the first to take the lead as Queen led off with a single and scored on an ensuing double by Leah Krohn (Taylorsville, NC). The Bears used a Tribe error to add to its lead in the sixth as Chrissy Lunsford (Tyrone, GA) singled, moved to third on an error and scored on a wild pitch. Shannon Handy (Advance, NC) got the win for Catawba as she allowed one earned run on six hits. Duvall allowed three runs on eight hits in the loss. Krohn had two hits for L-R in game two, while Pushard had two hits in the opener. White, Waldroop and Stacey Handy had a pair of hits in the nightcap for Catawba, while Handy had three hits in the opener and Rivera two. #####
