Baseball settles for share of SAC title; falls to Mars Hill 5-1
SALISBURY, NC – Mars Hill starting pitcher Nathan Fritz (Kingsport, TN) tossed six and one-thirds innings, allowing just one hit, propelling the Lions to a 5-1 victory over host Catawba College in South Atlantic Conference baseball action Sunday afternoon at Newman Park. With the win, MHC improves to 26-26 overall and 10-10 in the SAC. The 17th-ranked Indians fall to 32-17 and 14-6. Catawba, the tournament’s top seed, will play Presbyterian on Thursday night at 8:15 in the first-round of the Food Lion SAC tournament at Tusculum College.
The Lions jumped on the board first with a Matt Russell (Chapel Hill, NC) solo-HR to center in the second. MHC would put single runs up in the fifth and sixth as Lane Strobel (Walkersville, MD) provided a SAC-fly to center, while John Quail (Boonsboro, MD) reached on a fielder’s choice in the sixth
The Indians saw a five-run deficit with just nine outs to play entering the seventh. Matt Baker (Charlotte, NC) led off the seventh with a line-drive that ricochet off Fritz, before third-baseman Chris Argano (Marietta, GA) fired to first to retire Baker. Fritz had to leave the game, allowing just the one hit to Aaron Rimer (Salisbury, NC), who singled to lead-off the fifth.
The lone Tribe run came in the seventh as Thomas Giles (Lynchburg, VA) delivered an RBI-single up the middle. The Indians only managed three hits on the day, two of them belonging to Rimer. The Indians will end the regular season tomorrow afternoon in Anderson, SC at 5:00pm, before opening up the conference tournament on Thursday night.
