Fairweather repeats as SAC Baseball Pitcher of the Week
ROCK HILL, S.C. -- Newberry designated hitter Dean Walker and Catawba starting pitcher Matt Fairweather were named South Atlantic Conference Player and Pitcher of the Week, respectively, the league announced Monday afternoon.
Fairweather, a senior from Lenoir, N.C., tossed a complete game, four-hit shutout in the series opener against Mars Hill. With the win, Fairweather tied a 55-year old Catawba record with 29 career wins. In his lone start of the week, he struck out seven and only issued two walks. For the season, Fairweather is 7-2 and has compiled a team-leading 3.36 ERA. This is Fairweather’s second Pitcher of the Week honor in as many weeks.
Walker, a senior from Afton, Tenn., led Newberry College to a 2-1 record in the final SAC weekend series of his career against Lenoir-Rhyne. Walker hit a robust .667 (8-for-12) over the course of the weekend, while notching seven RBIs. Walker hit a two-RBI single in the final Indian at-bat of the second game, clinching a 7-6 victory for Newberry over L-R. He also knocked a double in the final game of the series on Sunday, as Walker tied the Newberry College record for career two-baggers (45). On the season, Walker is leading the Indians in batting average (.385), hits (65) and walks (29).
The SAC Players of the Week are determined by a vote of the eight sports information directors in the league.
