Handy named SAC Softball Player of the Week

ROCK HILL, SC – Presbyterian College sophomore Megan Wheelus and Catawba College junior Stacey Handy have been named the South Atlantic Conference Softball Pitcher and Player of the Week announced today by league officials. Handy, an Advance, NC native, hit .615 for the week, going 8-for-13 with three runs scored. She had a hit in all four games with three multi-hit efforts and had key seventh-inning double to start three-run rally to defeat Lenoir-Rhyne College in game two of DH. She also set a school record with eight straight hits dating back to Carson-Newman series which ended in game two vs. Lenoir Rhyne. Handy raised her team-leading average to .355 with 55 hits, tying her own school record. She also set another record this week with 33 runs scored on the year. Wheelus, a native of Florence, SC, pitched ten innings this week and compiled a 1-0 record with a 0.00 earned run average with two saves in leading PC to a 4-0 week. In the second game against Newberry College on Friday, Wheelus came in and shut down the offense, giving up only one hit and striking out three over the last four innings to lift the Lady Blue Hose to a 6-3 win. In the first game against Tusculum College on Saturday, she came in the game in the fifth inning, holding a 5-4 lead and gave up only one hit the remainder of the game in helping preserve a 7-4 victory. In the second game on Saturday, Wheelus picked up her second save of the afternoon as she came in with runners on in the fifth inning of a 3-1 ballgame, allowing only one of the runners to score on a groundout, and shut out the Pioneers over the last three innings to help PC to the 8-2 victory. The South Atlantic Conference players of the week are determined by the vote of the conference’s eight Sports Information Directors. #####
