Ettinger breaks win record as Softball splits with Pfeiffer

SALISBURY, NC -- Catawba split a softball doubleheader with visiting Pfeiffer on Monday afternoon at Whitley Field. Catawba won the opener 5-3, while the Falcons picked up a 5-2 win in game two. Catawba now stands at 25-23 on the season, while Pfeiffer is 16-33. Lindsay Ettinger (Pasadena, MD) earned the win for the Lady Indians in the opener despite allowing three runs on 10 hits over five and two-thirds innings of work. The victory upped her season win total to 19, setting a new school record for wins in a season. Catawba took the lead in the second, scoring three times on just one hit. Lacey Waldroop (Franklin,NC) was hit by a pitch and Katie Phelps (Prince Frederick, MD) singled. Liz Corbett (Severn, MD), Tammy May (Fairmont, WV) and Janie Motsinger (Kernersville, NC) followed with ground balls to plate a run apiece. Erin Furness (Greenville, NC) would double home a run for Pfeiffer in the third to trim the deficit to 3-1. Motsinger doubled to lead off the Catawba fifth and scored on a ground out by Stacey Handy (Advance, NC). Pfeiffer chased Ettinger in the sixth, scoring twice, but failed to plate the tying run with the bases loaded and one out. Phelps homered for a Catawba insurance run in the sixth. Shannon Handy (Advance, NC) recorded a save with an inning and a third of relief, allowing just two hits. Dacia Ijames (Kernersville, NC) went three-for-four with a pair of RBI and tossed a complete game five hitter to earn Pfeiffer the split. Ijames singles home a run in a three-run Falcon first and doubled home a run in the seventh. Catawba scored an unearned run in the first and got a sacrifice fly from Ashlee Rhoades (China Grove, NC) in the seventh. #####
