Baseball bounces back with win at Anderson as Baker breaks career RBI mark
ANDERSON, SC -- A four-run first inning and a home run by Thomas Giles (Lynchburg, VA) helped 15th-ranked Catawba to a 6-4 win over host Anderson in baseball action on Monday night at Anderson Memorial Stadium. With the win, the Indians improve to 33-17 overall, while Anderson falls to 20-32.
Catawba jumped to a 4-0 lead after an inning as the first four Tribe batters reached base. David Thomas (Winston-Salem, NC) was hit by a pitch and Matt Smith (Browns Summitt, NC) singled. Jimbo Davis (Salisbury, NC) followed with a two-run triple and Matt Baker (Charlotte, NC) delivered a single to break the school record with his 164th career RBI as Davis scored.
Anderson rallied in the second to tie the score with four of its own, all unearned. After an infield error kept the inning alive and allowed Jonathan Pitts, who had reached on a double, to score, Jeremy McCauley and Seth Thompson had back-to-back singles. Thompson’s single scored Jessie Whiteside, who reached on the error that fueled the inning. A walk by Caleb Owen loaded the bases for Jacob Reid, who delivered a two-run single to knot the game at 4-4.
Giles put the Tribe back on top with a solo blast in the fourth. Catawba added an insurance run in the seventh as Nick Lefko (Faith, NC) was hit by a pitch, moved to second on a sacrifice, and scored on a single by Matt Smith.
Anderson got just one runner to second base in the final seven innings against four Catawba relievers – Tim Smith (Walnut Cove, NC), Brian Benton (Wallace, NC), Matt Seabolt (Asheboro, NC), and Zach Evans (Greensboro, NC). Benton and Seabolt combined to strike out the side in the eighth, and Evans came on to strike out the side in the ninth to record his 10th save.
