Ettinger nets 20th win as Softball takes SAC Tourney openerROCK HILL, SC -- Catawba scored two runs with two outs in the bottom of the fourth to lift the fourth-seeded Lady Indians to a 3-2 win over fifth-seeded Lenoir-Rhyne in an opening round game of the 2005 Food Lion South Atlantic Conference Softball Tournament on Friday morning at Cherry Park. Catawba improves to 26-23 overall and will face Carson-Newman in a winner’s bracket semifinal on Friday afternoon. Lenoir-Rhyne, now 34-15-1, will play Newberry in an elimination game on Friday afternoon. Lindsay Ettinger (Pasadena, MD) scattered seven hits, walked three and struck out eight in the complete game win for the Lady Indians. She improved to 20-13 on the mound and became Catawba’s first-ever 20-game winner. The Lady Indians scratched for an early run as Stacey Handy (Advance, NC) led off the Catawba first with a double, advanced to third on a fly out and scored on a sacrifice fly by Jacqueline White (Mt. Ulla, NC). Lenoir-Rhyne battled back in the third. With two outs, Taylor Queen (Conover, NC) singled for the initial Bear hit of the game. Karen Reames (Laurens, SC) followed with a double and Karie Pushard (Harrisburg, NC) drove home both runners with a ground-rule double to left. Catawba scored the winning runs in the fourth with two outs. Lacey Waldroop (Franklin, NC) led off with a single and Janie Motsinger (Kernersville, NC) drew a two-out walk. Ashlee Rhoades (China Grove, NC) sliced a single to right that got passed the Bear right fielder and allowed both runs to score. Lenoir-Rhyne put their first two runners on in the sixth, but Motsinger caught a line drive off the bat of Pushard in right field and turned it into a double play to quell the threat. Rhoades had two of Catawba’s five hits off Alexis Kreske (21-11), who walked two and struck out five. Only two of the three runs off her were earned. Queen and Reames had two hits apiece for the Bears. #####
