Softball falls 5-1 to top-seeded CN

ROCK HILL, SC -- Top-seeded Carson-Newman advanced to the winner's bracket final of the 2005 Food Lion South Atlantic Conference Softball Tournament with a 5-1 win over fourth-seeded Catawba on Friday afternoon at Cherry Park. The Lady Eagles improve to 37-8 overall and will face the winner of the Presbyterian/Wingate game on Saturday afternoon in the winner's bracket final. Catawba, now 26-24, will face Mars Hill in an elimination game on Saturday at noon. Mandy Stevens (Knoxville, TN) and Erin Rutherford (Knoxville, TN) hit back-to-back one-out doubles in the first inning to stake Carson-Newman to a 1-0 lead. The Lady Eagles got a two-out, two-run single from Rutherford in the second to plate a pair of unearned run for a 3-0 edge. Catawba left the bases loaded in the second and failed to take advantage of a one-out double by Jessica Rivera (Key West, FL) in the third and a lead-off double by Jaqueline White (Mt. Ulla, NC) in the sixth. The Lady Eagles would get two-out RBI singles from Whitney Hickam (Knoxville, TN) in the third and Stevens in the fifth for its 5-0 advantage. Catawba finally broke through in the seventh. Stacey Handy (Advance, NC) and Lyndsey Gay (Cleveland, NC) hit consecutive one-out singles and Rivera followed with a RBI double. Rivera had two hits in the game for Catawba, both doubles, while Gay also collected two hits. Megan Elliott (Chatanooga, TN) earned the win for Carson-Newman to improve to 34-8 on the year. She allowed one run on nine hits with a walk and two strikeouts. Rutherford led the Lady Eagle offense with three hits and three RBI. Stevens and Lauren McKaig (Trenton, GA) each had two hits for C-N. #####
