Lacrosse holds off Queens to advance to DSC Tournament final

WINGATE, NC -- Catawba claimed an 11-10 win over second-seeded Queens in a semifinal game of the 2005 Deep South Conference Men’s Lacrosse Tournament on Friday afternoon at Irwin Belk Stadium and John R. Martin Field on the Wingate campus. The third-seeded Indians, now 6-7 overall, will face top-seed and second-ranked Limestone in the championship game on Sunday afternoon at 2 p.m. Catawba endured a lightning delay and a furious Queens comeback to take a hard-earned victory. The Indians led 11-8 with two minutes-plus to play in the fourth period when lightning sent both teams to the locker rooms. Queens freshman attackman Nick Mezzanotte scored twice in the final 25 seconds of regulation to make things very interesting. Mezzanotte’s final goal came with 2.4 seconds to play. On the ensuing face-off, neither team was able to gain possession as time expired. Catawba freshman midfielder Jason Collier (Franklin, MA) led the Indians with five goals. Catawba took advantage of eight penalties against the Royals, converting four extra-man scoring opportunities. Indian junior midfielder Joe Cristaldi (Highland, MD) scored three goals to support Collier’s five-goal effort. Catawba senior goal keeper Frank Fish (Damascus, MD) was solid in the nets, recording 20 saves. Fish allowed 10 goals in 60 minutes. For Queens (8-6 overall), sophomore attackman Josh Bryce had four goals. Mezzanotte added three goals and two assists. The Royals outshot the Indians 48-26.
