Men's Basketball gets exhibition game with North Carolina
SALISBURY, NC – Catawba College will face the University of North Carolina in a men’s basketball exhibition game on Nov. 12, announced Monday by Coach Jim Baker. “It is great opportunity for Catawba and the basketball program to go play North Carolina, the defending national champions,” Baker said, noting the game time will not be set until kickoff time for the Maryland/UNC football game has been determined.
Catawba earned a berth in the NCAA II field of 64 last season, posting a 23-7 record. The Indians lost 85-81 to Virginia Union, the eventual national champions, in the opening round of the tournament. Catawba will return all five starters from last year and 11 letter-winners. North Carolina posted a 33-4 record and had four players selected in the first round of the NBA draft. The Tar Heels return six players from last year’s squad.
“We ended the season with a tough loss to the NCAA II National Champions,” added Baker. “Now we open this year against the NCAA I National Champions.”
Catawba has earned five trips to the NCAA II Tournament over the past eight years and has lost to the eventual national champion in the opening round the last two seasons (Virginia Union in 2004-05 and Kennesaw State in 2003-04).
Tickets will be $10 for adults and $5 for students with I.D. and will be available at a later date. The first 500 adult tickets will be reserved seats. A football/basketball ticket package might also be available through the University of North Carolina. Details about a Chiefs Club trip package will be announced later.
