Women's soccer drops season-opener at Barton

WILSON, NC – Barton scored goals less than a minute apart in the first half as the host Bulldogs knocked off Catawba 2-1 in women’s soccer action on Satruday afternoon. It was the opener for both teams. Catawba, ranked 13th nationally, and got off to a strong start on a goal by McKenzie Burman (Rolesville, NC) in the 24th minute. Freshman Delaney Crouch (Charlotte, NC) chipped the ball to Burman, who rifled in a shot from 10 yards out. The Lady Bulldogs came roaring back with a Jordan Davis goal at 32:53. She beat two defenders on the right side and then ripped a low shot past the Indian keeper. Barton got what became the winning goal just 28 seconds later. Patricia Acosta sent a long serve from midfield that Tara Davis corralled, then lofted high over a charging keeper. The Lady Indians had numerous other excellent chances in the second half, but Barton keeper Ashley Ross made some superb point-blank saves and a cast of young defenders booted away several balls that were heading for the net. Barton finished with just four shots, compared to 12 for Catawba. Catawba’s Cathrine Balentine (Charlotte, NC) was credited with two saves and Ross made 10. “We fell asleep for five minutes defensively and were punished,” stated Catawba coach John Cullen. “Just a lack of concentration and we did not do the job. In front of the goal we lacked the quality to finish off a game we were in control of. Barton got two chances and put two away, we had a dozen chances and only put one away.” #####
