Football uses big fourth quarter to overtake Winston-Salem State

WINSTON-SALEM, NC -- Catawba College rallied for 20 fourth-quarter points to defeat host Winston-Salem State 20-10 in football action at Bowman Gray Stadium on Saturday night.  The 20th-ranked Indians win their 11th-straight season-opener dating back to a 1994 loss to East Tennessee State.
The teams combined for only 199 yards of offense in the opening half with the Rams breaking the scoreless deadlock on a 39-yard field goal by Matt Hind with 8:47 to go before the half.  Brad Roach (Williamston, NC) completed half of his 20 first-half passes for 108 yards, but the Tribe was held to just 15 yards on the ground with Mario Crowe (Charlotte, NC) gaining 20.  The Indian defense limited the vaunted Ram running game to just 58 yards in the opening half.

Winston-Salem State looked to have taken a commanding lead in the defensive struggle late in the third quarter as Jed Bines capped a 75-yard, 11-play drive with a one-yard plunge.  Bines carried the final eight plays of the drive to put WSSU up 10-0 with 1:24 to go in the third quarter.

Catawba put points on the board on its next drive, aided by a Ram celebration penalty after its score.  Rush Rollins (Kannapolis, NC) connected on a 37-yard field goal with 13:38 remaining.  A WSSU offside call negated an interception that would have halted the Catawba drive.

Roach, who was 15-of-19 passing in the second half, guided the Indians 66 yards for the tying score with 7:31 to go.  Crowe got the score from five-yards out, but Roach six straight passes to put the Tribe on the doorstep of the tying points.  The sophomore stayed hot on the next Indian drive hitting passes of 19 and 23 yards to Colin Reese (Charlotte, NC) and Trevan Davis (Thomasville, NC) to the WSSU 17.  He completed two straight to Joe Mitchell (Tallahassee, FL) to the Ram five, where Kory Fisher (New Bern, NC) scored the go-ahead points with 5:16 left.

The Tribe defense forced WSSU into three straight negative plays on the next drive and Fisher helped ice the game, spinning through the middle and breaking tackles before bursting down field on a 45-yard run to the Ram 11.  Rollins added a 32-yard field goal with 48 seconds remaining to cap the scoring.

Roach completed 25-of-39 passes for 232 yards for Catawba.  Corey Ready (Aiken, SC) had six catches for 68 yards, while Fisher and Rod Tenor (Cooleemee, NC) each had five grabs.  Fisher added 64 yards on the ground.  The Indians finished with 312 total yards, while WSSU had only 193.

Darryl Locklear (Pembroke, NC) was in on 13 tackles, including three for losses for Catawba.  Red-shirt freshman Pierre Deshauteurs (Pisgah Forest, NC) was in on nine tackles with one and half sacks.  Brian Biggs (Fayetteville, NC) also and one and a half sacks and nine total tackles.
