Volleyball splits games in opening day actionHICKORY, NC -- Catawba split a pair of matches at the 2005 Moretz Sports Volleyball Invitational on Friday in season-opening action. The Lady Indians earned a sweep of Pfeiffer then lost a five-game marathon with Slippery Rock. Catawba is 1-1 and will play two more tournament games on Saturday. The Lady Indians defeated Pfeiffer 30-25, 30-18 and 30-24, while falling to Slippery Rock 30-25, 30-25, 25-30, 28-30 and 14-16. Junior Amanda Nantz (Troutman, NC) delivered eight kills with five blocks and four aces in the win over Pfeiffer. Freshman Melissa Griffith (Williamsburg, VA) also added eight kills and had a team-leading 15 digs. Sophomore Jessica Cleary (Boca Raton, FL) posted a team-high 12 kills, including seven in the third game. The Lady Indians trailed late in the opening game, but Nantz had two kills and a block to help overcome the 24-22 deficit. Catawba got three kills and two aces from Griffith to open a 9-4 lead in game two. Two aces by Nantz pushed the lead to 15-5 and Catawba cruised from there. Griffith added a pair of kills late in the thid game to give Catawba a 24-21 lead, while Nantz and Cleary both added two kills to help close out the match. Nantz stayed hot against Slippery Rock with six kills and a block in the opening game win. Catawba trailed 11-6, but a kill and two aces by lone senior Summer Zuck (Kingston, TN) pushed the Lady Indians to a 13-11 edge. Griffith keyed the game two win as she posted four kills in the closing stages as Catawba pulled away from a 22-22 tie. She had seven kills and an ace in the game, while Cleary added six kills and an ace. The teams played a tight third game, but a 4-0 run late gave Slippery Rock a 27-22 lead and The Rock held on. Catawba rallied from a 27-23 deficit in game four to tie the game at 28-28, but Slippery Rock took the next two points to force the deciding game. The teams were never separated by more than two points in the fifth game and Catawba held a 13-11 edge, but could not hold on, losing five of the final six points. Griffith posted 22 kills and 23 digs in the game, while Nantz had 16 kills and seven blocks. Cleary had 14 kills and freshman Melissa Powers (Bennett, NC) had 10. Missy Bartholomew (New Carlisle, IN) had 37 digs, while Andi Henderson (Swansboro, NC) had 58 assists. #####
