Football takes Mayor's Cup with 38-6 win over Livingstone

SALISBURY, NC – Catawba College earned its sixth-straight Mayor’s Cup Trophy with a 38-6 win over visiting Livingstone in football action on Saturday afternoon at Shuford Stadium and Kirkland Field.  The 17th-ranked Indians improve to 2-0, while Livingstone falls to 0-2.After failing to score on its opening drive, Catawba marched 64 yards in 11 plays on its next set of downs to take a 7-0 lead with 5:39 to go in the first quarter.  A 28-yard pass from Brad Roach (Williamston, NC) to Rod Tenor (Cooleemee, NC) on third-and-15 helped set up the score which came on a 12-yard toss from Roach to Corey Ready (Aiken, SC).  A 58-yard kickoff return by Tyronne Baisdon (Ellenwood, GA) helped set up the first Livingstone score as Arturo Ruiz (Miami, FL) connected on a 45-yard field goal just over a minute after Catawba’s initial tally.

Catawba would score two touchdowns in the second quarter to take a 21-3 lead at the break.  Freshman Walter Horne (Statesville, NC) had a 14-yard scoring run, while Roach and Tenor hooked up for a seven-yard score with just over four minutes remaining in the half.

Livingstone got a second field goal by Ruiz to opening the second half scoring as the sophomore delivered from 36 yards out.  Chris Jeter (Jonesville, SC) set up the score as he took a high snap on a punt and ran 33 yards for a first down to keep the drive alive.  Kory Fisher (New Bern, NC) capped a 12-play, 92-yard drive for Catawba with a 10-yard run to put the Indians on top 28-6 at the 3:55 mark of the third quarter.  A 52-yard pass from Roach to Ready on first-and-thirty keyed the march.

In the final quarter, Roach tossed his third touchdown pass of the afternoon, 11 yards to Antwan Strong (Charlotte, NC), and Cory Darnell (Rural Hall, NC) added a 24-yard field goal to close out the scoring.  Roach finished his efficient day with 22 completions in 30 attempts, using 10 different targets, for 248 yards and the three scores.  Ready and Tenor each had four catches.  Fisher ran for 110 yards on 15 carries.

Jason Mitchell (Durham, NC) paced the Blue Bear offense, rushing for a team-leading 51 yards and throwing for 32.  Jeter had four catches for 29 yards.  Catawba out-gained Livingstone 440 to 172 and caused a pair of turnovers.  Keith Webster (Durham, NC) made 13 tackles for Livingstone.
